“Inside the God Jar”

“You should publish this.” These are the words that became the touchstone for the idea of a new book. For several years people have asked me to write a biography but that has never seemed to be the right way to go. However, when a friend who reads some of my writing every month urged me to publish what I’d given her, I realized what people wanted was the story behind the poetry books – my own spiritual journey.

The working title of the book comes from a jar on my friend’s desk I noticed when I first met her. A little ceramic jar, only about 6 inches high, it appealed to me at once and I asked the local potter who made it to create one for me as well. “Sarah’s God Jar” now sits in my home as a physical way for me to give over what I need to place in God’s hands. It’s a symbol of our relationship and so opening of it up is a symbol of talking about what I’ve learned in my spiritual journey with God.

As a focus, each chapter is a different image I’ve had of God and what I’ve learned through that image. Though God can never be encompassed by a single image, each one can teach us something about God and a variety of them teaches us to never put God in a box – or in a jar.

As I’ve just started writing the book, I do not yet know when it will be published but you can be sure I will keep you up to date on the project.
